Thinking About Starting a Nonprofit?

Indian River County has more than 500 public 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organizations, 125 of which earn more than $50,000 a year. All organizations serve community needs through different programs and services. Have you ever wondered how each of these organizations began their journey? If you are interested in starting a new nonprofit charitable organization, consider the following:

It is important to first acknowledge and become familiar with already existing programs. A nonprofit is mission based and mission driven. If there is an organization that aligns with your mission, follow-up and learn about their services.   Indian River Community Foundation’s online Nonprofit Search is a great resource for this.

If there is no other nonprofit serving the community need you wish to help, there are 4 main steps to setting up a 501(c)(3):

  1. File your articles of Incorporation
  2. Obtain an EIN
  3. File IRS form 1023
  4. Register your Florida Solicitation of Contributions

Indian River Community Foundation is a great resource not only for client needs, but for nonprofits as well. To learn more on how to establish a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, visit our Resource page under the Nonprofit tab.
