Hurricane Dorian Relief

Indian River Community Foundation recommends giving to one or more of the following organizations offering relief in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian’s impact.   These organizations are highlighted because they have existing operations or chapters in the region, the ability to incorporate a large influx of donations, and a strong, established record of excellence in disaster relief services.

Following a natural disaster, there can be an increased risk of fraud committed by individuals preying upon the good intentions of people wanting to help; donors should take care that the organizations they are supporting are legitimate. Indian River Community Foundation makes grants only to IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) public charities, such as the organizations below.

United Way of Miami-Dade, the Miami Herald/el Nuevo Herald and Univision 23 have activated Operation Helping Hands to help with relief, rebuilding and recovery efforts:  https://unitedwaymiami.org/

Additional information about the progress of disaster relief efforts and support for long-term solutions can be found at the Center for Disaster Philanthropy: https://disasterphilanthropy.org/

This information will be updated as more is learned about Hurricane Dorian’s impact on other areas.
