IRCF Awards Bike Walk Indian River County $10,000

Founded in 2015, Bike Walk Indian River County (BWIRC) is a coalition of community volunteers with the mission to make our transportation network safer to walk and ride bikes. Indian River Community Foundation recently awarded Bike Walk $10,000 for The Bike Rehab Project from the Community Enrichment Fund.

BWIRC volunteers repair donated bicycles and distribute them free of charge to individuals without reliable access to work, school, or services. Each recipient completes a free online bike safety course and receives a lock, lights, helmet, and a list of public bike repair stations installed by BWIRC. For many, receiving a bike is life-changing—it means access to jobs, school, medical care, and essential services. In Indian River County, where 49% of residents are considered transportation disadvantaged, the impact is profound. Some residents face commutes of over an hour by bus and foot—a bicycle often cuts that time in half, opening up job opportunities and improving quality of life. The Bike Rehab Project served over 500 individuals last year, all completing online bike safety education. The organization's advocacy efforts enhance local infrastructure and benefit every walking or biking resident.

Indian River Community Foundation’s discretionary grantmaking is aligned with a vision of a more healthy, prosperous, and generous Indian River County community. Grantmaking priorities are informed by the findings of the most recent community needs assessment and the most current data and information collected on Indian River Indicators.
