IRCF Awards United Way $30,000 to support Access to Justice

Indian River Community Foundation recently awarded the United Way of Indian River County $30,000 to support their Access to Justice initiative.

Responding to the urgent need for accessible legal services, the United Way of Indian River County launched Access to Justice (A2J) in partnership with the Clerk of Court, local judges, court administration, and county government. A2J Self Help Centers enhance access to the legal system for self-represented parties by providing information and assistance in the areas of family law, small claims, and residential evictions through self-directed legal kiosks, bilingual staff, & pro bono attorneys.

At four locations spanning geographic and cultural barriers, customers receive free help navigating court processes & procedures, connecting to community resources, and finding, completing, and filing appropriate forms. Customers can also schedule free form reviews with Self Help Center staff and a low-cost virtual consultation with pro bono attorneys. A2J has created a comprehensive, scalable model that addresses key legal needs, reduces barriers to access, and enhances the operation of the local justice system, all while fostering collaboration among community partners.

Indian River Community Foundation’s discretionary grantmaking is aligned with a vision of a more healthy, prosperous, and generous Indian River County community. Grantmaking priorities are informed by the findings of the most recent community needs assessment and the most current data and information collected on Indian River Indicators.
